Who We Are

Who We Are

Las Vegas Marathon training

Las Vegas In Motion is a merry group of nearly 250 determined Las Vegans who are training together for the 2009 Las Vegas Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon or Half-Marathon powered by Zappos.com for the benefit of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America.

This marks our 5th year of walking/jogging/running as a group with a shared goal: crossing the finish line on Marathon Morning, and having those finishers’ medals draped around our necks.

Since this year’s training has hardly begun we still have plenty of time for you to jump in with us with every expectation for success on December 6th.

Throughout each of these last 5 years we’ve met on Sundays at the Village Runner in the Stephanie Promenade which is a strip shopping center on the northwest corner of Stephanie and American Pacific in Henderson.  Owing to the madness of training through the Mojave summer, we meet around 5:30 a.m. (UGH!), do a brief warm-up followed by some stretching, talk briefly about “runner things”, then hit the dusty trail at 6:00 a.m.

This year we’ve started a new group in the Northwest part of the valley that comes together for our group training every Saturday morning through November 28.  On Saturdays we gather at Nu Vision Cyclery in the Trails Village Center which is yet another strip shopping center, but this one is on the corner of Village Center Dr. and Trailwood Dr. in Summerlin.  The Saturday group also meets around 5:30 a.m,, gets in a brief warm-up followed by some stretching, talks briefly about “runner things”, then hits the dusty trail at 6:00 a.m.

On Sundays we run mostly on the Pittman Wash trail which is closed to vehicular traffic.  We use the pedestrian underpasses beneath the intersecting surface streets to keep out of harm’s way.  When we do run on the surface streets we run comfortably in the wide bike paths.  Locals who live, work and drive in the area are quite used to seeing runners along those streets, and in our 4+ years of training there we have never had any issues.

We set out two aid stations with water, Gatorade and energy gel along the trail.  There are water fountains and bathrooms available at the Arroyo Grande Park, Pecos-Legacy Park and at the Silver Springs Recreation Center.  There is plenty of shade along the trail, and we share the wash with an abundance of rabbits, chipmonks, Gambol’s quail, and other small critters.  And we do see the odd coyote from time to time, but only when they haven’t seen us first.

On Saturdays we barn storm our way through

Both the Saturday and Sunday training groups are composed of different pace groups for the marathon and half-marathon.  Some of our groups are for runners, some are for walkers, and some cater to those who choose to do a little bit of each.  Whether you walk, jog or run, you won’t find a more loving and supportive group to share your weekends with.

Come and enjoy!
